Fresh Semen: - Here semen is taken off the stallion and inseminated into the mare within 4-6 hours.  This is similar to natural cover and as the semen will last 3-4 days in the mare there is limited scanning necessary.

Chilled Semen:  Here semen is taken from the stallion, filtered and extended with certain nutrients, then chilled down to fridge temperature to extend the life of the semen for shipping purposes, from mainland UK, Southern England or Europe.  It usually involves overnight couriers and the semen will last 36hrs in the mare.  Again scanning of the mare does not have to be intensive.

Frozen Semen:  Here semen is taken from the stallion and undergoes a freezing technique, where at the frozen temperature it can last years.  This involves using semen from anywhere in the world.  Once thawed out though semen will only live 8-12hrs.  This means that timing of the insemination needs to be precise to coincide with ovulation (release of female egg).  This involves intensive scanning to detect ovulation time.
