Pre-Purchase Examinations - 'Vetting' »
We offer two and five stage vetting, working to the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and British Veterinary Association guidelines.

Vetting is a five stage examination, although for cheaper horses it is possible to carry out just a two stage process (the first two stages listed below).
The five stages are:

1 - Preliminary Examination – Heart, Lungs, Skin, Eyes, Teeth, Scars / Blemishes
2 - Trotting Up & Flexion Tests – Checking for lameness or abnormality in gait
3 - Ridden Exercise – Walk, Trot and Canter on both reins
4 - Strenuous Exercise – Testing and checking Heart & Wind
5 - Second Trot Up and Foot Examination – Checking for exercise induced
Lameness.

If a two stage examination is chosen you should be aware that problems that would show up on a five stage examination may not be detected.
A certificate is issued after the examination listing findings and an opinion is given as to whether the horse is ‘fit for purpose’ – this may be required for insurance purposes.

It is recommended that you try the horse thoroughly prior to vetting. If you have any concerns regarding the horse (lumps, swellings etc) note these in order that they can be investigated.
The five stage vetting is an in-depth investigatin of the horse’s health, however it only reveals disorders present on day of examination and doesn’t always detect early stages of some conditions (arthritis, navicular disease etc) so if you are purchasing a valuable horse it may be advisable to carry out additional tests. These can be discussed with Vets at time of booking.
