What to Expect

How Our Emergency Service Works

1

You Call

Call our main number — 01745 584 516 — at any hour of the day or night. The call will be answered or directed to the vet on call within a very short time.

2

Vet Responds

The vet on call will speak with you, assess the situation over the phone, and advise on immediate steps. They will confirm whether an emergency visit is needed and give you an estimated arrival time.

3

We Attend

We travel to you with a fully equipped vehicle. Our vets carry the diagnostic equipment and medications necessary to deal with the most common equine emergencies promptly and effectively.

Our emergency service runs around the clock — including weekends, bank holidays, Christmas and New Year. There is always a vet on call. We do not use an answering service for emergency calls; when you need us, you speak to someone who can help.

Guidance

What to Do in an Emergency

While waiting for us to arrive, the following steps can help ensure the best possible outcome for your horse.

1

Stay Calm

Horses are highly sensitive to the emotions of the people around them. Try to remain as calm and composed as possible, even if you are worried. Your composure will help keep your horse calmer, which is particularly important if they are in pain.

2

Call Us Immediately

Do not wait and see if things improve. Call 01745 584 516 straight away. Describe the situation clearly — what you've observed, when it started, whether it's getting worse — and we will advise on what to do while you wait.

3

Have Your Horse's Details Ready

It helps to have your horse's name, age, breed, vaccination history and any known health conditions to hand when you call. If you have their passport nearby, have it ready. Also confirm your exact location and postcode so we can navigate to you efficiently.

4

Follow the Vet's Advice

We may advise you to keep the horse moving, to put them in a stable, to restrict food and water, or to take specific first aid measures. Please follow our instructions carefully — they are designed to keep your horse as stable and comfortable as possible until we arrive.

5

Ensure Access for the Vet

Make sure field gates are unlocked and vehicles are not blocking the entrance to your property. If it is dark, leave yard lights on or arrange for someone to guide us in. The sooner we can reach your horse, the sooner treatment can begin.

Important Notice Regarding Colic Surgery

Please note: we do not perform colic surgery at this practice. If your horse is suspected to require surgical colic intervention, our vets will assess and stabilise your horse as swiftly as possible, and we will refer you to the most appropriate specialist equine surgical facility with minimum delay.

Our vets are experienced in the triage and medical management of colic and will advise you clearly and honestly on the prognosis and the likely need for surgery. If surgical referral is indicated, we will contact the receiving hospital on your behalf and coordinate all necessary information to ensure a smooth and rapid handover.

In all colic cases, speed is critical. Do not wait — call us immediately on 01745 584 516.

Coverage

We Cover Your Area

Our emergency service covers the same wide area as our routine practice: across North Wales including Denbighshire, Flintshire, Conwy, Gwynedd and Anglesey, as well as the Wirral and parts of Cheshire and Shropshire.

If you are unsure whether you fall within our coverage area, please call. We will always do our best to get to you, and if for any reason we cannot, we will advise you on the nearest suitable emergency service.
